Delaware Horsemen’s Assistance Fund (DHAF)

The Delaware Horsemen’s Assistance Fund (DHAF)  provides aid and assistance to grooms, hotwalkers, exercise riders, trainers, and other backstretch licensees in racing. Assistance, subject to pre-approval and guidelines, can be provided on a routine basis and includes, but is not limited to the following:

Medical services when referred by our Wellness Clinic and not covered by employer’s, employee’s insurance or workers’ compensation insurance.
Dental  and eye care.

Applications are available in the DHAF Office and must be approved before treatment is received.

Services

Wellness Clinic The Backstretch Wellness Clinic is open to all currently licensed Delaware Park horsemen, their employees and dependents. The clinic provides: prescriptions, diagnosis and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries. It also offers a preventive program of immunizations, screenings and various health education and wellness services.

Counseling Services Our bilingual counselor Nan Bernardo-Freeman, LPCMH, NCC is available by appointment for a variety of employee counseling needs including traumatic stress and substance abuse. For an appointment please call  302-307-6130

Backstretch Social Services A variety of services are provided to backstretch employees, including our “Backstretch Boutique”,  a laundry and  Day room.

Chapel Services Christian fellowship and worship services in English  are held weekly.

Backstretch Boutique The Backstretch Boutique is located in the dayroom. Please check the schedule posted on the door for available days and hours. The boutique is filled with lightly used donations.
